According to a report, 74% of X’s most viral false Israel-Hamas war-related claims were pushed by verified users who pay for a blue check on the platform.

In the first week of the conflict alone, verified accounts promoted ten false narratives about the war. These false narratives received over 1 million likes, reposts, replies, and bookmarks and were viewed by over 100 million people globally.

X’s decision to allow people to pay for verification has inadvertently allowed bad actors to share misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war more prominently. The presence of these false narratives not only misleads users but also exacerbates tensions surrounding an already volatile situation.

The consequences extend beyond user perception as advertisers grow increasingly uneasy about X under Elon Musk’s leadership. Advertisers have become cautious about their ad spend and rates due to concerns regarding misinformation on the platform.

Hiring former NBCUniversal ad chief Linda Yaccarino as X’s CEO did not instill confidence among advertisers either. Additionally, disturbing content continues to persist on X despite efforts from moderation teams – further damaging advertiser trust in the platform.
